The Fight

The Fight

In “The Fight” by Richard Wright the narrator explained the hardships he had to go through on is first day of school in a new area. The narrator felt it was really important to fit in with the other boys at school. But on his first day of school during recess a group of boys started an argument with him, which soon led to a fight. Instead of the narrator becoming intimidated by the group of boys he saw the whole situation as a challenge. He believed that him standing up for himself and winning this fight would gain him respect from the other students. So while the narrator and one of the boys from the group where arguing there was a crowd of people trying to provoke the fight. When one of the student's thought they wasn't going to fight they pushed the boy into the narrator. Although the fight ended with a tie the narrator still felt he had to win to gain friends. But when he came back to school the next day he realized he didn't need to fight again, because he gained friends from standing up for himself

I agree with the narrator's actions and beliefs in this story. I would have reacted the same way because usually when I group of people pick on one person it's to test their character. If that person allows them to mistreat him/her people will continue to pick on them and take advantage. While I was in high school my friend never stood up for herself and people would say very bad things about her. Since she never stood up for herself instead of only verbally hurting her things became physical. So I feel the narrator went about the situation appropriately because he stood up for himself.
