Dead End

In the story "Dead End" by Rudolfo Anaya the main character had many choices to make. Maria is the main character, and the story explains the peer pressure that is put on her in high school. The story also expresses how Maria always studying and taking care of every thing at her home, so she never had time to hang out and have fun like the other kids in her school. Since she never hung out with the other kids and was always doing work people thought she was stuck up and that made her an out cast.

Maria has a crush on a boy named Frankie Galvan in her school. When her and other girls in the school started to notice him watching she was excited. One night she was home babysitting and Frankie and a couple of his friends drove buy her house and asked her to go for a ride with them. When she realized she couldn't hang out even if she wanted to it made her upset. Maria always wanted to be a part of Frankie's gang but knew she couldn't because she had promises to keep.

Two years prior when Maria's mom had passed away she promised her she would finish school and take advantage of her education. So no matter how tempting it was for Maria to fit in with everyone else, she never broke her promise. Maria really had a great empathy for Frankie because is girlfriend had passed away and he always seemed lonely. When she finally spent time with him she realized that eventhough they have gone through the same pain they are still two completely different people.

At end of the story Maria started to realize that she didn't only keep the promise for her mother, but for herself. Frankie and his gang where going down a path she wasn't wiling to take. She wanted to get and education and evolve and if that meant her being an out cast she was willing to accept that.
